Like you I just think it takes practice. I like the single reed better myself. In my opinion you can hit the highs better. Also with double reeds I think they stick easier.

Default double

Switching from a double to a single for me was a big adjustment in air flow control, my double you can blow till you pass out without breaking it into a sqeal, the single on the other hand takes some finnesse, but I agree with FirNaTine, IMO i can get a better range of notes from the single, and it sounds a little cleaner to me...

i can't get used to singles...i've been a double reed blower since i was ten...my river mallard double screams more than i ever need it to when hunting...the double just makes the feeding chuckle so much easier and the ease of blowing it makes it so fast. ps...mine never sticks when i'm hunting and i have a lot of saliva. as far as i'm concerned, theres no reason to switch to a single unless you want to get into contest calling.

I have been using doubles for a long time but got a hs ringer this summer and have been using it and sounds excellent. It is a single reed. Didn't seem to take to much for me to switch to it. This weekend also I am getting a calef neckbreaker which is a single reed also.

On my lanyard i carry a double reed and a single, when it gets into the late season sometimes my reed will freeze up if i dont watch it and get a break in the action. If a group comes by and i'm froze my single is always there to give an audible.

I like to carry both, gives you a back up and gives you the option to use either one you like.

Weather you blow a single or double reed what matters is how do the ducks react to your calling. Some guys blow both to change up the sounds. What ever works for you stay with it. If it's not working you got to change.

I recently purchased a new rnt double. When I purchased this call I was having my rnt orginal recorked, blowing these calls side by side was night and day IMO. I would blow the double and then pick up my original (single reed) Using the same air presentation as the double, the call was so loud I could barely stand it. By doing this I realized I really had to back off how much air was going through this call. After figuring this out, I will get to use the two calls for different situations and see how the birds react to each sound.
