Default If Your In The Market For A Pup

For those in the market for a lab pup, I thought I would post a few links for some important health information pertaining to labs. These are tests that should be done on labs before they are bred.

CNM (Centronuclear Myopathy)
CNM Website

EIC (Exercise Induced Collapse)
Exercise Induced Collapse - CVM - VDL, University of Minnesota

OFA (Othopedic Foundation for Animals) Hips and Elbows
Orthopedic Foundation for Animals

Cerf (Canine Eye Registration Foundation)
CERF - Canine Eye Registration Foundation

If you are interested in getting a pup, be sure the appropriate tests have been done. In the case of CNM and EIC, testing can be skipped but only if both parents test clear.

I have bought several pups in the past and will prob. have to in another 5 years. I guess for me and prob. 75 to 90 percent of the people out here if the parents are healthy and have never had any major problems I buy a pup. I have 3 labs right now 2 which are registered and one that isn't that are great dogs and do exactly what I want them to do at home and in the field. I find it just like all the hunt titles. Ya they are great but it boils down to how well you train your dog. You could have a 1000 dollar pup with all the goodies and checked out from head to toe but if you don't work with the pup it is just another dog.

Just because a pup is registered doesn't mean squat about the health of the pup.
While I agree that socialization and training are pieces of the puzzle to forming a great retriever, I also think it would be terrible to spend the time, energy, love and money training and raising a dog for two years only to have to put the pup down or retire it just because the breeders didn't take the time or spend the money on health tests.
If someone is unwilling to offer a health guarantee, you have to ask yourself why? Are they trying to hide something?

With all due respect AJB, I think Mark is trying to help the folks on this forum make intelligent decisions when buying a pup. If you chose to ignore the information out there regarding some of the problems that are affecting our dogs, fine, but why downplay good information just because you might have goten lucky in your choice?
To have a litter of puppies without the basic clearances (hips, elbows, eyes, EIC and CNM) is simply adding to the problems we are strying to eliminate. If it were only how you trained them it would all be so easy!

And by the way, it doesn't take $1000 to get a pup with all the clearances. But I am sure that this was just an exageration on your part.

Since this thread went off topic stop messing with the new guys head. We know that AJB will only edit your post if you talk postitive about John Deere.

Anyway having health test and trying to breed out some of those problems is always a good thing for any breed. Test cost vary from Vet to Vet but normally don't run to much since you can get most of these done with regular puppy check-ups.

The tests have nothing to do with titles or how well you train your dog. As Mark and Thomas stated and a couple others, it's about ensuring a healthy breed. How can you compare that to titles and training??

Are you insinuating that 75-90% of the dog owners out there, including you, don't care about their dogs? Just as ludicrest of a statement as yours.

Mark - thanks for your post and links!!

In the crate regards,
MM

Alright... I'm sorry but we need to keep this topic... on topic. I have deleted all following off topic comments. Why? Well, because this drama isn't necessary, management is undergoing an over haul. It's been posted everywhere if you have an issue come talk to me... if you don't, well -- suit yourself, cheers and take care. Effort must be made by both parties... I've been putting in my effort.

I'm all for letting a community regulate itself (and I prefer it), but currently this is dragging on about the past.

Please keep this thread on topic. Thanks!

Here's an example of what $550 will buy. To be clear, I am not connected to this litter in any way.

EIC/CNM clear litter. Sire:Candlewoods Luby Lou (Watermarks The Boss x Candlewoods Rita Renyolds)Dam: Ramblin Maxx Miracle JH (Lean Mac x Watermarks KD MH) Louie had 19 derby points,Qualifying Win, Amateur RJ in limited trialing. 9 puppies: 2 black males,6 black females & 1 yellow female. Pups born May 2, 2011. Good Derby birthday. $550/black, $650/yellow. Located 40 miles north of Nashville, TN.

It's a buyer's market out there. You can get nice, trainable, genetically clear pups cheap.
