Doom decoy will be our traveling decoys for 2011. Doom is also coming aboard as a sponsor DOOM-Home , Thank you Jay, we appreciate it. The variable this year is we have options, Jay is sending a pair of Mallards and a pair of Canvasbacks. I will have the decoys in 3-4 weeks and will post pics of them. I have some Doom redheads, very nice decoys.
![]() We will start the signup in August ***There will be a minimum post count to get included into the traveling decoy event (we will decide this soon)*** *** When the season is completed and we get the decoys back, we will auction them off and the money will get donated to the Waterfowl Association of Iowa Home *** The general rules are as follows and are the same as last year (subject to change before season) General Rules (very basic, hunt, pics, ship decoys, and then post) - Each hunter will have the decoys for 4-5 days, then needs to ship it to the next member in line. Please make sure the next member gets the decoys by Friday. - Remember, we are trying to schedule this traveling decoy so guys/gals passing it to each other will have enough time to ship it ot the next destination. If direct delivery doesn’t work, Priority Shipping through USPS will work. All shipping costs will be at the expense of the participants. - Pictures must be taken and posted in the traveleing decoy forum, along with a short story about your hunt. We will have a sticky thread for the decoy. - The next guy in line must have the decoy by Friday of his/her scheduled weekend to start the hunt. Remember this when your shipping it. Doom Process/Materials - Our bodies are molded using expandable polystyrene or EPS beads. Once the body is “skinned” in mastic and tight weave burlap, they are nearly rock solid, yet still lightweight. The bodies are a “suc duc” style decoy, and can be ordered with or without keels, which are made of synthetic wood. Our heads are molded with 8lb two part urethane, and the bills are always reinforced with a 3 inch wood screw. handmade glass eyes are inserted in the heads for a true to life appearance. Our paint choice is UV and fade resistant acrylic, and it is applied using an air brush. All of the heads are painted by hand with small detail brushes with the same paints as mentioned above. Lastly, we seal the decoys with one coat of matte finish spray, for protection.

Hi everyone. My name is Jay Comyns, and I make DOOM decoys. I'm a third-generation decoy maker, so I like to think I know what I'm doing. I look forward to making your traveling decoys, and seeing pics or hearing stories of them in action!
I thought I'd show some of you the "highlights" of decoy molding. Some of you have done it before, and will recognize some of the steps/photos. If you've never made decoys before, feel free to ask questions. They start out as "raw" EPS (expandable poly-styrene) beads. They are small, hard plastic pellet-like beads. They contain a gas called pentane, which makes them expand, and fill whatever mold you're using. Below left, are "raw", unexpanded beads. On the right, pre-expanded, which have been boiled in water for about 2 minutes. ![]() Once the mold is filled with pre-expanded beads, and boiled in water for 25 minutes, you end up with a decoy body. ![]() Once the seam edges are ground off, the burlap and mastic are applied. After just one coat of mastic, note all of the little pinholes in the burlap. ![]() ![]() Now, several thin coats of mastic are applied to fill in all the pin holes. This helps seal up the burlap, protecting it from water damage. ![]() ![]() Now, the body is ready for paint! I'll post up more pics in a few days showing the head making process. |

oops...wrong picture. That's a scoter carved by Josh Ward. I have yet to have a mold made of that, but someday I will.
Here's the pic that should have been there, a burlapped body, ready for paint.

Has a possible post count been made, and sign up sheet been sent around yet? I would really like to get in on this, especially around they time we head to SD in late November or the Mississippi in early November.
