Default New season proposals 2011-12

I thought it would be best to start a new thread as opposed to getting lost on page 8 of Bills post:

The quote below is the DNR rationale for the changes from what was proposed in March, note both zones have the same opening days now.
The NRC meeting to finalize the waterfowl seasons will be Thursday Aug 11 at the Wallace building in Des Moines.

Quote:
A random survey of hunters who had purchased an Iowa Duck Stamp in the past three years showed that hunters were twice as likely to prefer hunting during the third week in October compared to the second weekend in December in the south zone. Migration data and hunter harvest also indicate that more hunters spend more time afield and see more ducks during the third week of October compared with the second week of December.
Based upon the comments and research findings, the opening date for the duck season in the south zone was moved forward one week from what was proposed in the notice. Changing the duck season dates necessitated changing the goose season dates so that the goose season opens on the same weekend as the duck season. It also necessitated changing the youth waterfowl season dates so they occur 2 weeks prior to the second opening of the duck season in each zone.
Season dates –
north zone. For all ducks: September 17 through September 21 and October 15 through December 8.
Canada geese and brant: September 24 through October 9 and October 15 through January 4, 2012.
White-fronted geese: September 24 through December 6.
Light geese (white and blue-phase snow geese and Ross’ geese): September 24 through January 8, 2012.
Youth waterfowl hunt. October 1 and 2, 2011

south zone.

Light goose conservation order season. Only light geese (white and blue-phase snow geese and Ross’ geese) may be taken under a conservation order from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from January 14, 2012, through April 15, 2012.

Cedar Rapids/Iowa City goose hunting zone.
Cedar Falls/Waterloo goose hunting zone
Des Moines goose hunting zone
Season dates. September 3 through September 11.
Zone Boundary:
The north goose hunting zone is that part of Iowa north of a line beginning on the South Dakota-Iowa border at Interstate 29, southeast to Woodbury County Road D38, east to Woodbury County Road K45, southeast to State Highway 175, east to State Highway 37, southeast to State Highway 183, northeast to State Highway 141, east to U.S. Highway 30, and along U.S. Highway 30 to the Iowa-Illinois border. I got one... but I never filled it out. To be honest, it was a combination of things and I should have done it.
I had just moved/was moving into a new house... I had just taken a new job and was working 6x12s. I just never made the time to fill it out and the questions seemed pretty trivial. It doesn't help that last season I only got to hunt a handful of times because of the new job.

I guess that makes me a scumbag waterfowler for not doing it but it's too late now...

Henry Wallace State Office Building
4thFloor Conference Rooms
502 E. 9 thStreet
Des Moines, IA 50319

Starts at 9:30 am, the agenda says the public participation is at approximately 10 am but unless a miracle happens it'll be a bit later than that. I expect the actual vote on the seasons at about 2 pm but there's no way to know for sure.

Yep, but we got it changed last year, if south zone hunters can get to the meeting in numbers we can do it again.

There is a difference between me and most post and its all about the number. I am good at pushing some buttons that propels the thread.

Hell I just assume you guys say thank you and be done with it , however I will not hold my breath.

There was one thing Bill did have right in the other thread. The December numbers are skewed because of gun deer. I would be one of them. Last year was the first year duck season ran long enough past deer season that I could take really advantage of it.
The years before that it is always the Thursday after and with the style of drive hunting my group does I am normally wiped and need a one to two day recovery.

when a post is 8 pages long, the only people still reading it are those who've already posted to it.

a new post is the best way to point out that changing the south zone duck dates also screws with the south zone goose dates.

And that's why in all the years WAI has been working on this and I've been talking to the NRC about it, I've never tried to claim it's about numbers of hunters.
Instead it's really about giving the segment of hunters who like hunting late a reasonable opportunity to hunt the way they prefer just like all the early season guys get a good opportunity to hunt the way they prefer.

and that's why the new survey hasn't changed anything, we knew last year more guys were out hunting in October than December, we've always known that, and the commissioners have always known that but we DID get the dates changed last year and if we get a good showing at the meeting and e-mails we can do it again.
