I'm looking for some feedback on Pudelpointers. They have me really interested.
Anyone own one or hunted with one? |

I have a 6 year old male Pudelpointer from Bob Farris' Cedarwood Gundogs. If you want a true all around gundog, you won't find anything any better than one of Bob's dogs. Go to his home page at www.cedarwoodgundogs.com or ask anyone that has one.

My quest for a Vesatile, had me start with PPs.
In general I opted for DDs instead for these reasons: 1. Waiting List 2. Inconsistent coats-DDs are much more consistent as the gene pool is much larger, and more breeders are selectively breeding for proper coat. PP breeders just dont have the gene pool to choose from for bitches and studs that the VDD does. 3. Price- a good DD breeding is 1/3 less on average 4. Lack of Hardness and Tracking. Few PPs ever kill a fanged vermin or demonstrate any tracking prowess in testing or in real encounters. 5. Protectiveness-PPs are not as protective as a DD in general, I like that about the DD 6. Lack of Conformation, coat and record keeping. All of this is tracked via the VDD GNA Club with DDs 7. DDs with PP/DK motherlines are a good find. If the PP was the perfect breed, the German establishment wouldve not pressed forward with the DD, which is more popular as a Hunting dog, by a Wide margin over the DK/DL and PP at the bottom. DD brings Grit, Hardness and Tracking that is missing from many PPs, imo. 8. That said, If I could not acquire a DD, the VPP German bred PPs would be next on my list. For Upland work, might they be hard to beat as a wire coat dog, but I can choose other dogs that are equally as good or better and still get the Combo upland/ water work, ie Navhda bred GSP or DK. Summary: For all around work in the wire coated dogs, its tough to beat a DD. Cleaning a PP dog like this, post hunt, is Not fun, you will comb out burrs a long time ![]() ![]() This is the quintessential DD, perfect coat/conform rating and what the breed strives for

Anyone can hunt mallards, but you have to be born a diver hunter. You have to really, really love to hunt ducks to deal with frozen outboards, rough water, and the hard work it takes to hunt divers. The worst thing about growing old is that people no longer find you dangerous.

Mine will take hand and whistle signals, and run blinds out to 150 yards. That takes time like anything else. I started with soup tracks as a puppy with liver treats, to teach blood tracking. Did them once about every 2-3 weeks incrementally longer, to gain confidence. Steadied to wing n shot n Force fetch, that takes time, sae as with any bird dog. Nothing comes easy, but mostly its exposure to learn, and mostly positive training methods. Most are Hard as hell on game, intense prey drive, but softer than a Lab in temperment not taking the hard corrections or constant repetition. More like training a Golden in that regard, could be the Poodle ancestry. Smart as a whip, bore easy. Last edited by Bill; 10-30-2011 at 11:33 AM. |
