Got a question for those wiser than me. I've been duck hunting many years and never really thought of this until recently. If you've got both duck and goose decoys out in your spread do you use your goose call when ducks are working along with the duck call and vice versa? There is usually two of us in the boat calling so its not that we couldn't but after this last wknd noticing that more ducks were wanting by the goose dekes. I know we haven't had geese want to sit in the duck decoys but rather work to the goose spread. Thanks in advance.

I have decoyed mallards using a goose call before and just goose decoys. So I dont think it would hurt, last weekend we had geese working and were calling at them and we littraly had a drake mallard coming flying out of no where and dump right into the goose decoys.

I had a flock of teal bomb through while trying to work geese yesterday. Another bunch sat between the goose and duck decoys. I wouldn't blow my goose call to attract ducks though.

I forgot to add that we hunt over water. I've read that in the fields people say you don't really need duck decoys. We primarily hunt ducks but do get geese to come byonce in awhile. Don't know if that makes any difference at all.

Do it quite often, and seems to work great.... Duck will look at your goose decoys first more times than not. Mainly because they are bigger, and they also see them as a confidence decoy at times when there are lots of geese in the area... I usually have a younger hunter (or someone who I don't want to blow thier duck call) give a few honks everyonce in a while.. Don't blow your goose call at the ducks tho... just so they can hear what the would hear when normally landing in a mix of ducks and geese

ive definitely blown a goose call to bring ducks in...seems to help sometimes on days when there are a bunch of other hunters screaming at them on their duck calls. i have who's ever with me blow some nice soft stuff on a duck call and i try to sound like content geese on the water. doesn't always work, but you would be amazed how many times a couple of honks or clucks will turn ducks around that are trying to peel off.
ever had it happen that you are calling hard at a flock of geese and suddenly are surprised by the flock of mallards that are cupping up over your decoys? i think sounding natural and looking like real birds on the water goes a long ways |

We do the same thing at times. Gotta shake it up and be different. Often times we use a goose call as an attention getter, once you get thier attention, work the duck call. |

You kind of mentioned this, but put the goose blocks where you want the ducks to land.

I have seen a couple of Sean Mann videos and it seems like he only uses goose decoys and calls when hunting ducks in a field.
Once a year I go out to western Nebraska to hunt late season geese. Last year we went while it was still duck season and the only thing they do differently to bring the ducks in is add 3 mojos to the 10+ dozen goose decoys. The tornado of ducks that forms when those mojo's are turned on is NUTS! |

I have shot a few ducks over goose only spreads. I believe using both calls does work. I have seen wary mallards drop in with a goose call after calling them with a duck call with out committing.
I am not any wiser, I just have had opportunities to try knew things on days when birds won't commit.

I usually want them out front... Not with the geese. And I run a BIG setup in mid to late November...so that could be a really really long shot on those days I get what your sayin... Just have to be careful how it's worded for those with less experience. What I have noticed is that ducks, mallards in particular, like to land right inbetween the duck and goose blocks... Then some times they won't even come close to them.. Therfore having the ability to throw a variety of setups is always a valuable skill that you get with personal experience and the experience of those hunting with you...

last year i kept track of where the ducks landed over water on my last 10 hunts or so...9 out of 10 times they landed right in with the goose floaters. whether i had 2 or 12, it didn't matter
