Use whatever you want. So long as it's clear to your dog what you mean when you use it. Just like some people call it come some say here.
Standard these days is a triple trill. I use 2 quick whistles. Just make sure it's distinct enough so your dog can decipher from whistle stop, whistle sit, and any other whistle commands. |

Use what you want. But be consistant.
Just to give an idea...I use two different signals on the whistle for"come"... Three peeps is come. And 6-8 is my encouraging whistle after my dog makes a retrieve... That's how it's been with all my labs and workd well

I use 3 shorts for come (bird or not), 2 shorts to change direction (upland hunting), and as many shorts as it takes to say "come NOW" (followed by electricity).
Edit: It is very easy to teach using a check cord.
