Default Books and dvds

I haven't trained a dog in some time and was wondering what books, DVDs, or methods you have been using lately. Not getting a pup til next year but think the down time this winter would be a good chance to catch up on some new techniques. Any help is appreciated. Thanks all.

I only use books and DVDs as a guideline and to get ideas and methods when things get tough. That said, I think Dokkens latest book is one of the best. I usually don't use the platforms he's so proud of though.

Water Dog is a good, but very basic, book if you just need a refresher.

Any other info I need I refer to the internet.

Its great to finally see someone that wants to do their homework ahead of getting their pup!
That being said Smartwork has been getting great reviews the last couple years and "Total Retriever" by Mike Lardy is a staple of the dog training world as far as systems go. Also "Fowl Dogs" by Rick Stawski, "Retriever Training Basics" by Danny Farmer & Judy Aycock , and "Duck Dog Basics" with Chris Akin are good DVDs.
For books I can recommend "Finished Dog" by Charlie Jurney, "Training Retrievers for marshes and meadows" by Jim Spencer, "Game Dog" and "Water Dog" by Richard Wolters are good basics books, "Top Dog" by Middleton gets into more drills, and "10 minute retriever" by John and Amy Dahl. I also hear that Tom Dokken's book is decent.

He named off a lot of good DVDs right there. another good book is Retriever trouble shooting by John and Amy Dahl.
