What is the best approach to scouting. I haven't hunted geese since I was 16 and I would really like to get back into it again but not sure where to begin with scouting. I know I need to put the miles on the truck to find the geese but how far out should I start scouting? Many evenings I can see the geese as they are leaving town to go feed at night. They will sometimes fly over my house.
Thanks for any help you guys can provide. |

following the geese is a start...but it can be tricky... more so than most will give credit esp if your following town geese... if your following them through town, good luck unless the population is less than 5k..... youll loose them quick...
this is how i scout the birds in my area(s) that i hunt if they are coming from a town... -figure the direcition they are headed on day 1 -on day two set on a road in that direction to intercept them....if i dont catch them on day 1 that is...more than one truck if you have a friend thats scouting with you..cover more area.. then follow to the field. and get permission to hunt. and hunt.. everyonce in a while if i follow the second or third flock from a cemetary/pond/lake/golf course there is usually several more behind them... so i can back track and pick them up quickly if i decide i have to follow them to the field... which is generally hard to do through stop signs/lights and traffic etc. thats the only difficult thing about scouting geese. town geese... sometimes unpredictable... other times, very easy to hunt.... but difficult to scout when flying through town

The best way I've found is to watch message boards until someone gives away their spot, then lock and load.

I am at the edge of town. So following them or setting up on a crossing road isn't a problem.
I am going to give it a try this next week since actual hunting is out of the question for a week or so. See if I can get it figured out because would like to try field hunting some late season geese this year. Jay |

Yep there are plenty of geese up there...most likely going North and a little East of you. They tend to meet up with the geese that sit at Hunters Ridge golf course and feed in the same fields.

The best way I found, is find where they roost or loaf and follow them from there, by far the easiest way to find them!

Personally, I see more geese flying out of the south and east side of CR than I do out of the north side, but that's just me.
