I have permission to hunt a pretty choice field highly used by stupid birds. Hunted it last weekend and had hundreds of ducks and close to as many geese pile in. We set 2 doz duck dekes and 6 goose shells out with a little gap between. Ducks were landing in the dekes but geese just flew over. The geese were only 15-20 yards up but I would like to see some fully commit. Should I keep the duck and goose dekes seperated or mix them in together? I don't think it will matter much judging from our first outing but I'm new to field hunting and would appreciate any tips. Thanks guys.

For field hunts, Base your spread around the geese... Some ducks behind the blinds or in small groups out front... Bring 2-3 mojos and put them right behind the blinds so you can turn them off when geese start coming... You really don't need any duck decoys in the field besides a few spinners.. Hell some won't take anything besides spinners when targeting ducks in a corn field...
But the geese will not like them... So make sure they are off with white sides down

We run all goose decoys when hunting ducks in a field, no need for spinners or duck decoys. If you can do a feeding chuckle you can usually get the ducks to commit it seems like. As far as mixing decoys together I wouldn't recommend it also geese won't usually land in with ducks while feeding. Keep your goose decoys out front and if you chose to use duck decoys set them up about 5 to 10 yards behind your blinds.

Getting flocks of honkers to fully commit to 6 goose shells is gonna be a pretty hard challenge no matter where you hunt. Also if you have a mojo going in your spread, geese will 90%(my guess) of the time not commit.

That's why we run them from behind the blinds....so they get turned off... I might add to your post... Prob closer to 99.9% of geese won't finish when the wings are spinning.... If it's off they can't tell ones even out

Agree with what was said before. We run Goose decoys with spinners and some FB mallards or mallard field shells. Got remotes for the spinners so we can click them off when the geese are coming(never had any luck shooting geese with mojos out), I think they are a must have for mallards though. IMO.

I would agree with going heavy on the goose dekes. I don't know if mixing them is detrimental but for field sets, I'd go with several dozen goose dekes. Silhouettes may be the way to go.

I don't have the dough to drop on a bunch of full bodies, or shells for that matter. I'm leaning towards some socks...

How many robos do you put in your spread? This might be a stupid question but they make robo geese, right?

invite someone with a good spread to your spot, pay attn to how and what they set up. This would be a quick way to learn what took them many years to learn, and you might make a new hunting buddy or 2. Easier to get in with someone when you have the spot.
