Default German shorthair pointer, good duck dog?

I have a 9 year old German shorthair he is a great pheasant dog, but I recently got hooked on duck hunting because of the lack of pheasants. Does anybody on here duck hunt over a shorthair? I have taken him out a couple times but he won't sit still and always wanting to run around and look for pheasants. Anybody else have this problem?

I wouldn't call that a problem if all he wants to do is run around looking for pheasants. That is what he was bred, trained and programmed to do, hunt for pheasants.

GSP's can be waterfowl dogs but in my opinion they don't make great waterfowl dogs because they lack the "coat" and "patience" to handle sitting still in cold wet conditions for very long at all. Some Shorthairs can be trained to do just about anything if you train them from a pup on up but to take a 9 year old dog and now throw a new type of hunting situation at him just isn't going to work.

When my GSP was younger, I'd take her out early season, usually walk in areas. Sometimes in the boat, but she did lack patience there. For the most part she retrieved some ducks for me each season until it got colder. It was discouraging to see her sit there shivering even with a vest on.

All in all though, GSP's can make great duck dogs, but I think the training needs to start from pup stage. It is not fun when your dog breaks when ducks are circling and you get the eye from your buds. good luck though and let us know how it turns out.

I have 2 gsp's right now both about 2 years old and love the water. One is really patient in the duckblind and will lay at my feet until we shoot. I just started him this year so the whole going out of the duckblind is new but he will retrieve the ducks. I do agree they get cold easier then labs but he dont mind as long as the heater is going
