Default How to scout

Where i hunt we get a fair amount of ducks. But a mjor problem is I have never seen birds around here feed in a field during duck or goose season. Does that mean that they just stick to small ponds and water ways the whole season or what?

around ames...most certainly not. they go out to feed, not the easiest to find you have to follow them

exactly.. follow them, and if you cant follow them due to work school or whatever..(just dont let tail be an excuse lol). set up on them for when they come back from their morning feed. we have killed alot of ducks between 9 and 11am on a few of the ponds that hold good birds in my area.. makes for a relaxing hunt and can be full of action if/when they return

ducks are alot harder to spot in a field than honkers.. its easier to either get them when they are flyin into it or if you know what field/area they are using, scan it with a spotting scope or binos...

Geese are usually easy to follow, unless they go over/through town. Ducks are nearly impossible to follow. You pretty much have to be there when they hit the ground or shortly thereafter. A few thousand ducks can disappear in a chiseled field. Geese blend in surprisingly well too, you just have to train your eye.

Alt, I don't hunt Ames. Not enough ground here. You have to know the right person or your SOL.
