I prefer to go with no decoys in the timber. In a field I will use several hen decoys and maybe a jake. Late season the more hens the better. I also do not call a whole lot either, especially on public ground, it seems they have heard just about everything you can throw at them.

Everyone here is right, i’m only going into my 3rd or 4th year, first season is the best chance to hear your birds coming, the later in the year, the quieter they seem to get, woods no decoys, fields a couple hens, first season you can use a jake , the problem with a male decoy is if the tom coming in is a jake or if he’s already been put down by a bigger bird he might hang up….. and just because you hear em and they don’t come in, come back to that spot a couple hours later after he’s done with the hens, he may want round two with some strange. most of my advice is relayed from my dad’s cousin, he’s a pro and always gets his bird, don’t over call but have more calls than you can count, i prefer mouth calls, but have box, slate wingbone, the more variation the less likely he’ll make you for something that’s not turkey…… that’s it , i could go on and on but i’ll stop
