Anybody ever hunted Jim Ketelsen Greenwing Marsh? Grandpa was telling me about it on the trek up to Minnesota. Trying to find local spots this year.

Thanks,
Mason

Did your grandpa know Jim Kettleson? You can shoot some teal n woodies there early and maybe a few geese occasionally

No i dont think so. He lived in Ames his whole life and worked at the clinic in town for years. He said him and my uncle went there a lot when he still hunted...age is a horrible thing.

Never hunted it, or saw a whole lot of action. Sometimes there is a truck or two out there during pheasant season. The ducks move through that area though....used to have a couple spots up that way. It is close to town and an easy scout if you want to give it a shot!

Yeah Ada Hayden is a major pit stop in this area the lake almost always has water and probably has 5000 geese on it right now. Got to hate living so close to the lake though, geese fly over in waves EVERY day. Belle if you wouldnt mind where around here where the spots?

A couple private holes...I did some work for some landowners up that way. Ill touch base with you if I'm ever up that way to hunt them but I'm not even sure if the offers still stand. They were pretty protective of their places, and rightfully so.....things get tough around that part of the state.

I'll get back with some info on public ground when I'm on a real computer.

Couldn't have said it better myself! I checked the story county website and there it also said petersons park and skunk river flats. Anybody tried those either? Really trying to shoot my first green head around home.

petersons park i believe is very deep water...not something you could do without a boat. i've driven by skunk river flats a few times and have never seen anything there, though it might be a good place early for woodies or late for geese

Sounds like you saw this already:

http://www.storycounty.com/index.asp...,6,1,Documents

Larson and Cooper Marshes are both near Ketelsen and that area has quite a few potholes for being a black desert. I've never tried either, but like I said, the ducks DO come through that area.

Flats doesn't hold much water, P pits is deep.. but you could probably hike in on the west side of the west park? Never tried it. I did see a Cinnamon Teal/Blue Wing Hybrid out there once. Cool bird!!!

I was always half tempted to try Cambridge Pond/Askew bridge... and there IS a new wetland being built onto that park but I don't know if it will be finished or even public this year.. its a mitigation thing that has been slow going.

Colo Bogs and Hendrickson are by far the biggest areas, but they attract a lot of people, too. None of them are secret honeyholes, but public land (and water!) is hard to come by in Story County. This is a perfect time to get out and walk some of the public areas, though.. give it a shot, scout scout scout and see what you come up with.

Good luck!
