Default Bull Dozing fence lines

My dad rode with me to the boat show today and I have to say i was a little depressed with what I was seeing. I bet I saw 10-12 different farms along Hwy 61 that were bull dozing tree lines btwn fields. The fires were burning alll day. We saw them in the morning, then more in the evening on the trip home. My dad and were talking about what a shame it was. Lots of wildlife habitat going up in smoke.

i guess with high corn prices we need ever row of corn.

It is going on all over. Heck by me there is a 10 to 15 acre marsh that is geting covered up wit dirt from the hig rim. Nocking the top off to level it out some so its not so high, taking the dirt and filling in the marsh.

Sad as hell.

Or cutting down all the soft maple and mulberry trees along a drainage ditch and then watching the bank fall in. I just don't get it sometimes.

This is the worst year I have EVER seen for this! There are miles upon MILES of fencerows, drainage ditches, and sloughs being removed from our landscape to never be seen again. What happened to all the concern over soil erosion?

Ethanol happened and made corn 8 bucks a bushel. You would think that would make farmers less greedy, but it's just the opposite.

They do it because they know we will be the ones that pay the subsidy check and they know we will be the ones who pay for the clean up bill.

When that stops and we send them they Bill, only then will policy change.
This whole thought about voluntary compliance is a $%^$^%$%^$ joke. They are the ones laughing their ash off why we the tax payer foot the Bill at both ends.

I think it is funny listening to people complain on what people do with their OWN land. I guess if I had a chance to make another 3 to 5k I would do the same thing. In fact yesterday we cut out trees and shrub brush along one of our south fenclines in one of our fields. We left some of the nice trees like the oaks but the rest went. Why you man ask? They shade the crops so they don't grow as well and the yield isn't as good along with the take nutrients out of the ground that the crops use.

You have to look at it this way as well. If the person on the north side of the fencline just bought the land on the south side of the fencline why not take out the fence and farm thru??? Makes no sense to have a fence run through a field that you own. Just is a hassle to have to leave a field to go to the other field when you can make it just one field.

I think it is funny everyone keeps bashing the farmers constantly yet you prob. kiss their ass when it comes to hunting season so you can hunt their land. Give me the names of the farmers land who you hunt I will let them know how you really feel about them. Sorry fellas just need to vent it gets old listening to people try to not allow another american to try to make more money for their family.

Adam, you are exactly right. I farm by Sioux City and there are plenty of trees and scrub around. It's called cow country and trust me it's there. Everyone complains but they are still eating cereal for breakfast and meat for dinner. Wonder where that all comes from, the farmers possibly?

Every year we sift through trees in our pastures and fence lines and have to deal with all the downed cotton woods that are rotten and ruin our fences. If we don't, cows would be running through "mothers" pretty gardens and flower beds. Your welcome.

It is a new erra in farming, and whether everyone likes it or not, most of the jobs around are here do to agriculture. The history of farming is ups and downs. I don't blame a guy a bit for getting what they can now. I say its shame on us for not banding together to get more land in Iowa set aside for nature. Don't blame the government, support places that are making a difference in preserving land. Just look at the Hardin County Conservation board, the support they get, and the prime areas they are saving every year. It can be done. Everyone needs to put there money where there mouth is. Those of you older folks complainging on here probably could have done a heck of alot more when land was 1k and acre, but decided not to. I will get down off my soap box now, and continue to support Ducks Unlimited and other organizations who are helping to preserve what they can. We can all do more than blame farmers.

Open winter and good prices. Family thinking about selling. Landlords with extra income working with the tenants. Guys getting tired of that crappy brush scratching and breaking stuff. There are alot of reasons to do it. I guess taking some pride in the appearance of your own property is only allowed in the suburbs.

AJB, I think what they are trying to get at is that farmers are self confessed stewards of the land and water. What we are seeing only appears to make the erosion and water quality issues worsen. Sometimes there is more to the big picture than a few bucks.

Times are changing. There are hundreds of things to complain about but very few do anything. Even little things like walk a gravel road to pickup trash. Or talk to a stranger on the neighbors land. Then call the neighbor. Donate time to help a conservation club or county program.
Biggest one of all respect land owners, you are the guest. Leave the land as if you were not there. This means close all gates, do not leave ruts with your big ass 4X4, and always pickup all of your trash (empty shells).
On the political side why should a grain producer be paid to grow grains and then get paid again for selling that same grain. I think that is called a subsidy.
My neighbor wanted to make more money so he put in another mail box.
