The first thing I would do since you live in Cedar Rapids is Join http://www.eihra.net/ Start going to their training days. The guys there are more than willing to help you out. Axe might chime in and give you more info.
So does your dad have any interest in training/hunting with you?

We have guys all over eastern Iowa that would probably be willing to help, including me! I live down in North Liberty, and you would be welcome to train with me ANY time and I will help you in any way I can!

As for books and DVDs... "Water Dog" and "Game Dog" are both by Richard Wolters and are great books for beginners. "Game Dog" covers a little more including upland training. I have both books and you are welcome to borrow! Other books that are recommended are "Training Retrievers for Marshes and Meadows" by James Spencer, "10 minute retriever" by John and Amy Dahl, and "Retriever Training" by Tom Dokken. Some of these books are also on DVD, but a couple other DVDs are "Duck Dog Basics" with Chris Akin (you may borrow this from me), the "Fowl Dogs" series with Rick Stawski, and "Retriever Training Basics" with Danny Farmer/Judy Aycock.

PM or email me with any questions or to get my # if you would like to chat.

Welcome and it is awesome for young people to enjoy the outdoors.
EIHRA is a really good club. They will help you a lot. The best thing is that you can get some feathers into the dog in the off season. I was a member until I moved away.
I found out that with a young pup you have to teach them to learn. Might sound funny, but teach them anything that leads to what you want. Obedience is a really good start. And always keep it fun for both of you.
